tow winter break

Don't get me wrong, I love being home for a while. But "while" is the key word here. I have been home less than a week and I am ready to run back to Madison. Yes, I love my family. But I love them even more when they are not telling me what to do every five seconds! Plus there is no decent internet connection in our house. Me, the internet addict, plugged in 24/7, stuck with dial up. Shudder, no thanks. That's why I haven't been updating. I simply don't have the patience sit around for pages to load. I am in the library now with decent connection speeds, so it is allright. I really like all the love that is on my wall. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, and trust me I need warm and fuzzy. Well, fuzzy not so much. But definetely warm because my mom doesn't turn on the heat!! Brr.
I've been having a pretty eventless winter break. Just catching up on sleep, being lazy, talking to my brother, and talking on the phone. My mom is trying to convince me to go walking with her in the morning. I hate mornings, but I love my mom, so I will give it a shot tomorrow. Of course all this time I need to be working on my thesis. I figure after lounging around for a few more days I will be ready to plunk down and get that darn outline done! But for some reason when I am outside of Madison, I don't want to do school work.
I won't bore you with any more of my so mundane life in Milwaukee. All of you have a great new year, and a safe one too. I'll probably do some sort of best & worst of list for later posting purposes. It's not like I have much else to do!

Big, big, big congrats goes to my lovely friend and roomate Rachel. She graduated yesterday with her degree in German! I am sooo incredibly proud of her. Here are the pictures, the rest are on flickr.

Before the graduation there was a reception. I was expecting some qualiy schmoozing time, but turned out to be just cake and coffee. Since I didn't have breakfast Rachel gave me her slice!! God, I love this girl!

102_1095
Who graduated? Me, me!

102_1105
Her mom (Mary) got Rachel an "alumni" mug

102_1112
Honestly is there a way to look good while wearing a zillion layers plus a winter jacket? Didn't think so! See the coffee cup in my hand? I spilled it on the stands. Go me!

And this one is for Rachel, control your tears! Lets get those donation checks rollin!

tow one down two more

I hate the finals week with a passion. Honestly, whose bright idea was to have finals on the weekend? Finals suck just as much without having to drag myself out of bed 8 in the morning on a freaking saturday. Ugh! I am done with the J335 final. Honestly group projects are allright as long as everyone is pulling their weight. Luckly most members of our group worked pretty well.
Wednesday is my last final, then I am home free. I was planning on spending the break sleeping, but that is unlikely because I have to work on my thesis. I just need school to be over, and January to get here!!!

tow slacking off

I have reason to believe my ratio of posting is directly correlated with amount of work that needs to be done. See here I am instead of tackling two huge stories I have due very, very soon I am posting here.
I missed both of my classes because I woke up sooo late. Sigh, the winter doesn't do me any favors. The lack of sunlight really gets to me. As a cure my doctor had suggested at one point to use a "sun lamp." I would turn on this extremely bright lamp and then sit by it for half an hour every morning. I am not sure if it worked but I stopped after a few tries because I kept falling asleep instead of basking in the light. It kinda looked like the one here http://www.summertan.com/Catalog/desk_lamp_3531834.htm
I suppose I am not slacking off too terribly much. I did get two interviews done for my Cardinal feature story thingee. I just need to interview one person. I think it was Les who mentioned his lack of interst in the "fake stories" and honestly that's what the stories we write for classes are. I mean I put in so much time and effort into writing the damn things, and they don't get published anywhere and 9 times out of 10 I can't submit them as clips when I am applying for a job! I am kinda unmotivated to the story for the J335 class because of this. Plus I am graduating in a semester and honestly I am kind of getting sick of school work!
Right now I am in the College Library with Tina. She has a 10 page paper due on Saturday. Lets look over her shoulder to see how many pages she has whipped up. Hmm, hard to tell because she's writing a message on her friends wall on Facebook. Oh wait, she does have some sort of an outline hand written. But considering her paper is going to be 10 pages 1/4 page out line isn't gonna cut it.
UPDATE: Tina has figured out a thesis
I think I'll head out to the Cardinal office to look at the Cardinals from the 1970's. So much to do, so little time, and no motivation!

tow funny stuff

Aren't computers great? Especially chat programs, you can talk to people who are thousands of miles away with the click of a mouse and some keyboard keys. I do have a few friends I chat with on occasion. But recently a flurry of people have been adding me to their chat list on MSN. Weird! I block all of them, because I mean I don't know them! But I swear everytime I open MSN 10 more people had added me to their lists. Finally I unblocked one of them that sounded decent enough and asked him what was going on. Turns out there is way to hack other people's lists and make them your own. So once one person added me to their list, everyone who hacks their list add me and so on and so forth. Right now there are over 200 people on my list, and I personally know maybe five of them tops! But it does provide an intersting insight to the turkish chatting community! Rachel and I read their nicknames for fun. It does provide a solid ten minutes of entertainment.
Speaking of good entertainment, my ever humorous roomate, Rachel, found the greatest book for me! It is called "Choosing your mate for marriage" Don't get blind-folded into marriage" It has a picture of an Indian couple getting married, both have their eyes blind folded. I am going to share with you the valuable insights I have gained from reading this book.
Here's the cover of the book

102_1060

This comes from a chapter describing whom women shouldn't marry.
The mom's boy-- Momism
The mom's boy is a pampered child, usually spoilt as a baby. The man-child, all his life idenfiies himself with his mother and remains tied tightly to her. He suffers from mother-fixation even when he becomes an adult. He leans on his mother for ever. This 6-foot baby may get sick every time he has to make a decision.

I busted out laughing when I read this one on the bus! I swear this person time travelled to 2004 and met my ex and wrote this desription of him. Shudder to think what would have happened if I stayed with him.

This is appreantly what men want..

The beauty of Female form:
Three things white: The skin, the teeth, and the hands. (Check, check, and are you kidding me, check!)
Three things black: The eyes, the eyebrows and the eyelashes (Sorta check, I've brown eyes)
Three things red: The lips, the cheek and the nails (I suppose I can dip my finger nails into red paint and smear it over my lips and cheeks?)
Three things short: The teeth, the ears and the feet (Darn, there goes my fantasy of someone accepting me as a Vampire with clown shoes)
Three long: The torso, the hands, and the hair (I am 5'5'' so does that mean long torso? I do have long legs, that doesn't count?!)
Three wide: The chest, the forehead and the space between eyebrows (Umm, I do have a big forehead, but I am too lazy to pluck my eyebrows)
Three narrow: the mouth the waist, and the ankles (But isn't a full mouth more attractive? Note to self, stop the silicon injections immediatedly)
Three thick: The arms, the thighs, and the calves (Aha, check! Double check on the thick thighs and triple on the calves!)
Three delicate: The fingers, the hair and the lips (What the hell does delicate fingers look like? Should I adorn them in lace gloves?! I do have very thin hair, so check there!)

Time to get our your tape meaures. Do you have the ideal figure? Here are the measuraments: Bust 36" Waist 23" Hips 35" Height 5'5" Weight 120 lbs. (91 cm, 58 cm, 90 cm. 165 cm, 54 kg)

And to all my single sisters out there, I recommend the chapter called "The art of catching husbands" The subheadings include "How to fascinate man, Easiest way to impress men, Don't marry a genious, The kind of girl men want to marry, Man is more concerned with outward appraence of a woman than anything else," and my personal favorite " Sagging Bust line."
The author says "the most magnetic focus for the male's eye is the female's bosom" There is even suggestions for exercises for uplifting the bust line. I'll be sure to keep you guys updated (not!)

Last one then I really need to go to sleep
All girls want to marry rich husbands
"The firs ambition of every girl is to get a wealthy husband with a fat bank balance, rather than a really worthy and virtious man, as men want to marry beautiful women for which they are eeady to overlook other good wifely qualities"

So there you have it, all the advice you could ever hope for from Mr. P. H. Khanna, Marriage Consultant. I will await your adoring letters of thanks and invitations to your wedding when you marry that guy w/ the fat bank balance!

Shameless self promotion: My article is coming out on the front page of the Cardinal (above the fold, thankyouverymuch) tomorrow. So pick it up!

I was looking around for the lyrics of a song I wanted to post, but I came across this at this adress http://turkpop.prettysenshi.com/artist/ I can't restrain myself from posting this! It is the English translation of a very popular Turkish pop song! Just too damn funny to pass up.

Now I've come back to you, meek as a sheep.
When you wished me to I've hunched down at your knees.
This time, I've thrown my pride into the fire,
I've burned it and come back.
Throw me out if you wish, kiss me if you wish,
But please listen first look into my eyes.
Believe me, this time,
I've understood the situation (know this), I've repented.
I've repented.
Ooofff oooofff
Put hot peppers onto my tongue and lips.

tow sneezing cat

I wish I was a cat. Right now Mr. Hobbes (our cat) is laying on the orange chair across from where I am sitting. When I left for class this morning around 8:00 he was laying on the futon. I came home around 3:00 he was laying on the floor by the heater. And now he moved to the orange chair. I mean seriously how awesome would it be to have the life of a cat? You lay around all you want, you can sit on anybody's lap that you want to, people feed you and scratch you under your chin and if you are lucky they also feed you tuna. I have heard Mr. Hobbes sneeze a few times before but now he sneezed three times in a very short amount of time. Weird! We also have a dripping faucet problem. I assume it would be less of a problem if I washed the dishes, because the water keeps dripping on the dishes, but I am honestly too damn lazy to do anything productive today.
On other news I finally got an article published in the Daily Cardinal. I think I finally found an editor who wants writers on his staff. I would link to it, but I am too damn paranoid about my name. I know, I know I spill pretty much everything about myself but not my name. Weird. I actually did use it in one of the entires, but I don't remember which one so I won't bother to take it out. Anyhoo, now I have an article coming out on Monday, and a feature article sometime next week. It is very exciting, and honestly it is such an ego trip to see your own name in print, correctly spelled with the umlaut and all.
Thanks to Jess now I found out that my heart throb, crush extraordinaire Matt Damon got married! To quote a friend I am mad at right now, I probably didn't stand much chance anyway! What can I say, all the best to them.

Well I really didn't need to take a quiz, but more eeyore piccies on my blog makes me happie!

tow hmph

Sometimes I wonder if I should sign up for some sort of "insensitivity training" to stop myself from getting hurt at every little thing. When I heard the expression "wears her heart on her sleeve" I thought, yes that is me. I can't ever hide what I am feeling, and I am always so full of emotion. I suppose itmight be a good quality sometimes, but it usually ends up hurting me. One sentence, one look can make me sulk for hours, or days. I take off hands comments personally and get hurt because of it. I care so much about other people, and so passionate about my friends that they end up hurting me, sometimes unintentionally. Sigh, I gotta stop caring so much...

So I'm breaking the habit
I'm breaking the habit
Tonight

Clutching my cure
I tightly lock the door
I try to catch my breath again
I hurt much more
Than anytime before
I had no options left again

'Cause inside I realize
That I'm the one confused

tow my old house

I forgat how nice breaks feel. My class ended unexpectedly early, and the next one doesn't start until noon. So here I am sipping my latte and updating my blog. The rest of the day will be spent on tracking sources down for my story. Oh, joy!
Since nothing exciting is happening my life (well something very exciting is happening, but I am not at liberty to discuss it just yet) I am going to post some pics!
We watched a movie a couple of days ago, I think it was called "Tootsie" with Dustin Hofman. It was pretty funny. After the movie Alex was looking through a photo book when I said Rachel has a jacket just like the one on the cover. Rachel donned the "awesome hat" and the fur jacket. Of course kelebek was ready for action with her camera!

102_1050
I think it is a mink coat, I don't remember. One of Rachel's friends gave it to her. Isn't it hideous?! There is the book on the left that was our inspiration for the pose.

102_1053
And this would be Alex with the awesome hat and the fur jacket!
On the background you can see our new windows and the tips of the "Alex Plus" caulk guns I threathened Alex with so he would post on my blog.

I donned the awesome hat and the coat, but I somehow ended up looking like a small bear, so I am not posting it. Here's a cute pic of me and Rach instead taken on the same day.

102_1052
I love my Eeyore hoodie!

Now for some nostalgia. Our old neighbor, Serkan Abi, was kind enough to take some pictures of my grandma at our house in Istanbul and send them over. I want to share where I grew up.

Picture 016
This is our front yard. That is of course, my grandma. The windows on her left were our kitchen windows. See the red curtains? For one bayram (eid, holiday) my grandma sew a skirt for me from that cloth and she made us the curtains with the remaining fabric. You can also see part of the gate. I used to put my feet on the railing and swing on the gate. This was also the yard where most of our evcilik (house) plays took place.

Picture 009
My mom actually cried when she saw this picture. This is our kitchen. This actually used to be my room, but I grew out of it and my parents made this the kitchen and made the old kitchen my room. Those red plastic chairs has been there forever! I'll try to find a picture of me when I was in first grade sitting on those exact chairs and the kitchen table!

Picture 015
Here's a better shot of the entire house. My grandma and grandfather build the house from ground up. Whenever they got a new bonus they would add a new floor or windows or something. We lived on the first floor, my grandma on the third, and my uncle on the second floor. But now my grandma lives on the first floor and rents out the top two floors.

Picture 010
This is where the picture I put yesterday came from. On the background is my desk that my mom had built just for me. What is so incredible about this picture (well incredible for me anyway) is that my 7th grade schedule is still taped on it! It is right under the blue clock, which has been in that house as long as I can remember. I can't make it out too well. I can see "Ing, Turk, Bed, Cog" Meaning, English, Turkish, Gym, and Geography.

I am going to get going for my discussion section for J560, history of Mass comm. Yawn, I hope I can stay awake for that boooring TA's murmuring! Honestly, I had bad TAs on the past but this one gotta be the worst I had the 7 semester I have been attending university. What a complete waste of time. I woudln't be going to the section if it wasn't 15% of my grade. Can't wait till evals.

tow new boots

YaY, I have new boots! I was actually perfectly content wearing my old ones, but they were old. I I got them when I was a sophomore (10th grade) in high school. I loved them so much but my mom decided that it was time that I moved on. So yesterday we went boot shopping but no luck really. I got to hang out at Borders and buy another copy of "Pride and Prejudice." Another copy because genious me lost the first copy I had. I read the book halfway, seen the movie, and now I am reading the other half of the book. Interesting way to tackle it I think.
Speaking of new things, we also have new windows in my apartment. The landlord wrote in our contract that we would get new windows "before the next heating season" and we are got them two days ago. At least my apartment is nice and warm. I was wearing my winter jacket in Milwaukee until my dad intervened and turned on the heater to 70 degrees. I would rather have it around 75, but it is much better than 60! There isn't much snow in Madison, but it was snowing a lot in Milwaukee. What do they call it, lake effect? Yeah that sounds about right.
Tomorrow the next wave of insanity begins. It is not going to let up until the end of all the classes, which is right before Christmas. I am so looking forward to having a break without thinking about the stuff that is due in a few days.
I think I am gonna go to bed early, well earlier then usual anyway! I am excited to wear my new boots tomorrow. I remember when I was little whenever I got new shoes I would sleep with them in my bed side. I usually got shoes for the begining of the school year, the two eids (bayram, holiday) and summer. I would wear them inside until I had to wear them outside. It is such a weird feeling stepping outside with brand new shoes on. I'll try to remember tomorrow morning the feelings I used to have when I was a kid. But I would probably be rushing to catch the bus to do any remembering!
One last thing before I go. One of our friends in Turkey sent us pictures of my grandma. This picture of me was in the background. My dad said I was about a year old when this was taken!

tow alex rocks

Whoo Hoo, after about a year of begging, threating, sulking, and pointing an "Alex Plus" brand of caulking gun at his head Alex (the comic artist of Get Extra Credit who recently received a "grr" for future plans to discontinue his awesome comic) caved in wrote something for my blog! As in true journalistic fashion I offered him a bribe for writing. I promised to post an Ozcan Deniz song for him. Now if you are not up to par with Turkish music, Ozcan Deniz, sings "Arabesk" a type of music I am not really fond of. But a promise is a promise, so here is the song of choice of my guest writer.
Bir sene yalvarmak, tehdit etmek, surat asmaktan sonra Ahmet bey sonunda misafir olarak bir sey yazdi. Ona soz verdigim gibi onun sectigi Ozcan Deniz sarkisini post ediyorum.

Be hey vicdansiz yureksiz
Ol deseydin olmez miydim
Sen efendi ben de kole
Ol deseydin olmaz miydim

Gerek yoktu yanmalara
Yanipta kul olmalara
Benim icin ummanlara
Dal deseydin deseydin dalmaz miydim

Bilirsin sevdandir ahtim
Ne tac isterim ne tahtin
Yureginde bin yil mahkum
Kal deseydin kalmaz miydim

Yanardim yanardag gibi
Puskururdum lavlar gibi
Sonbaharda yaprak gibi
Sol deseydin solmaz miydim

Now back to our regularly scheduled nonsense by kelebek! Not a whole lot going on. I am just chilling at home. And when I say chilling, I mean chilling. My mom has an aversion to heat. The house is about 65 F (17 C) freeezing cold! My brother has a basketball game today that should be exciting. Then we are going to work on his homework. It is going to be a busy weekend!
Stay warm everyone

tow guest writer -- Alex

Welcome, dear readers, to Kelebek's blog!
My name is Alex, and I have been requested to write a so-called "guest
column" on this-here website. How amusing.
Here, then, is my treatise:

"On the Writing of Blog Entries: Do's and Do Not's in the Modern Blogosphere."
By a Professor of International Repute
In this day and age of the "Internet," and especially after the
terrorist attacks of 9/11, it is more important than ever to understand
the nuances of "posting" to the "Web." This "posting," known in the
vernacular as "Web logging" [hereafter: blogging], is one of the
world's newest media of communication. Bloggers, the agents of the so-
called "Blogosphere," are compelled to post their thoughts, emotional
output, and other psychosomatic internal phenomena to their blog via
complex processes of textual encoding, computer server input and
output, and a monitor interface accessed through "hypertext transfer
protocol" [http].
Once posted, these "blogs" can be accessed by any interested
party from any location on the globe with access to a computer and
the "Internet." This process has served to unite epistemic communities
from locales as distant as the United States of America and the
Republic of Iraq [cf. esp. Riverbend 2005].
Unfortunately, this latest development in international
communicative processes has not been without drawbacks. Most notably,
some American or English-speaking bloggers are unaware that proper
blogging is irreconcilably linked to proper English, i.e. the standard
language of most education and government in the United States of
America. In an attempt to foster informal, popular social interactions
between the blogger and the bloggee (the reader of the blog), many
bloggers choose to discard conventional or proper approaches to
English, often with devastating results.
Consider, for instance, the phrase "I love a blog." Typed on
one blog, this simple phrase became, "1 10v3 4 810g," something
unreadable to the untrained eye. Even short words like "are," "you,"
and "too," considered easy to type even by most second-graders,
become "R," "U," and "2," respectively, each of which is much more
difficult to type due to the locations of these keys on the standard
keyboard. "Are you going too?" Becomes "RU goin 2". [n.b. Omission of
punctuation and non-standard contraction are also common features.]
On the other hand, fluent, proper and accessible "blog English"
can be achieved by....
